How to Read a Job Notice and Spot Fake Job Offers

A government or private job notification can look long and confusing, and fake job offers are designed to look real. This article shows you how to read a recruitment notice section by section, how to check that it is genuine, and the warning signs of a fake job offer, so that you apply correctly and do not lose money or personal data.

Part 1: how to read a job notice

Most recruitment notices, especially from government departments and district offices, follow a similar order. Read them in this order and note the key points.

  • Issuing office and notice number: who is recruiting (for example a district office, a board or a commission) and the reference number and date of the notice.
  • Post name and number of vacancies: sometimes split by category (reservation) or by district.
  • Nature of the job: permanent, temporary, contract or outsourced, and the contract period if any.
  • Pay: a pay level / scale for regular posts, or a fixed monthly amount for contract posts.
  • Educational qualification: the exact degree or certificate, and whether experience or typing / computer skills are required. Tip: "equivalent" qualifications are decided by the recruiting body, not by the applicant.
  • Age limit: the minimum and maximum age, the date on which age is counted, and age relaxation for reserved categories, persons with disabilities, ex-servicemen and others where mentioned.
  • Residence or language conditions: some district posts accept only local residents; many Tamil Nadu posts require knowledge of Tamil.
  • How to apply: online on a portal, by post, by e-mail or in person, and the exact address or e-mail ID.
  • Important dates: the start date, the last date (and time), and dates for the exam, interview or certificate verification if given.
  • Fee: whether there is an application fee, who is exempted, and how it is paid. Many district contract posts have no fee.
  • Selection process: written exam, skill test, interview, certificate verification, or merit list.
  • Documents to attach: certificates, photo, community and other proofs, often self-attested.

Tip: make a short checklist for each notice with the last date, the qualification, the age on the cut-off date and the way to apply. Keep a copy of the original notice with your application.

Part 2: how to check that a notice is genuine

  • Find it on the official website. Government notices are published on the official site of the department, board or district. In Tamil Nadu, many district notices appear in the recruitment or notice section of the district's website (ending in .nic.in or .gov.in). Open the site yourself instead of using a forwarded link.
  • Match the details. The notice number, post name, dates and address should be the same in the copy you saw and on the official site.
  • Check the contact details. Some district offices do accept applications by e-mail, sometimes even on a general e-mail service. What matters is that the e-mail ID or address is the one printed in the official notice on the official website.
  • Be careful with look-alike websites, whose names are close to an official site but slightly different, and with social media pages that copy logos.

Part 3: warning signs of a fake job offer

  • Asking for money for "registration", "security deposit", "training kit", "uniform", "verification" or "offer letter" before you get a job. Genuine employers do not take such payments to give a job.
  • A job without any selection: an offer letter without an exam or interview, or "100% guaranteed job".
  • Pay that is too good to be true for very little work, such as "earn daily from home by liking videos" or "task-based" jobs on Telegram or WhatsApp.
  • Pressure and urgency: "only a few seats left, pay today".
  • Requests for OTPs, bank passwords, card details or remote-access apps. No employer needs these.
  • Government jobs "through a contact" for a payment. Recruitment to government posts follows the notified process only.
  • Poor language, wrong logos, or a free e-mail ID that is not mentioned in any official notice.

What to do if you suspect a fraud

  1. Stop. Do not pay or share any more details.
  2. Keep screenshots of the messages, the website and any payment receipts.
  3. If you have lost money, call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 as soon as possible and report on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in). Inform your bank immediately.
  4. Warn friends and family who may have received the same message.

How Dhru Dhani E Serv publishes job notices

On our Jobs page we summarise notices from official sources in simple English and Tamil. We do not take applications, we do not collect money for jobs, and we do not promise selection. Each notice tells you to read the official notification and apply only as it says.

Frequently asked questions

A company is asking for a refundable deposit before joining. Is that normal?

Treat this as a strong warning sign. Verify the company independently before paying anything.

I missed the last date by one day. Will they accept it?

Usually not. The last date and time in the notice are final unless the recruiting office officially extends them.

Can someone apply on my behalf?

A centre can help you fill an online form, but the details and declarations are yours. Check everything before you submit.

Official sources: the website of the recruiting department, board or district (for example the district's .nic.in site); National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) and helpline 1930 for fraud.

This article is general information from Dhru Dhani E Serv, a private e-Sevai centre (e-Sevai Centre ID: TNEFACBE054-01), not a recruiting agency or a government office. Always follow the official notification.
