When you send money to a bank account, fill a loan form or set up a salary credit, you are often asked for the IFSC, and sometimes the MICR code. Both identify a bank branch, but they are used for different things. This article explains what each code means, how to read it, where to find it, and how to avoid sending money to the wrong account.
What is IFSC?
IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is an 11-character code that identifies a bank branch taking part in electronic fund transfer. It is used for NEFT, RTGS and IMPS transfers to route the money to the right branch. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI):
- The first 4 characters are letters that stand for the bank (for example SBIN for State Bank of India).
- The 5th character is always 0 (zero), kept for future use.
- The last 6 characters identify the branch. They can be digits or letters.
Example of the pattern: in an IFSC like ABCD0123456, "ABCD" is the bank, "0" is the fixed fifth character and "123456" is the branch. Tip: the fifth character is the number zero, not the letter O; typing the letter is a common mistake.
What is MICR?
MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) code is a 9-digit number printed in special magnetic ink at the bottom of a cheque. It is used in cheque processing. As described by RBI:
- The first 3 digits are the city code (for example 600 for Chennai).
- The next 3 digits are the bank code.
- The last 3 digits are the branch code.
The bottom line of a cheque (the MICR band) also carries the cheque number and other fields. Banks have been advised to show the MICR code and IFSC in the passbook or account statement as well.
IFSC or MICR: which one do I need?
- Online transfer to another account (NEFT, RTGS, IMPS with account number): IFSC.
- Cheque-related work, and some forms (for example mandate or investment forms that ask for it): MICR.
- UPI using a UPI ID or mobile number: usually no IFSC is needed. If you pay to an account number through UPI, the app asks for the IFSC.
- Money from abroad: the sender's bank usually needs a SWIFT code, which is a different international code. Ask your bank for it.
Where to find these codes
- Cheque book: IFSC is printed near the branch address at the top; the MICR code is in the bottom line.
- Passbook or account statement: usually on the first page or in the header.
- Your bank's official website or app, and the branch itself.
- RBI's website has a bank-wise list and an IFSC search.
- You can also use our free IFSC search page to look up a branch from its IFSC.
Bank mergers and changed codes
When banks merge, the branches of the merged bank usually get new IFSCs of the bank they joined, and the old codes are withdrawn after a notice period. If you have an old cheque book or passbook from a bank that has merged, confirm the current IFSC with the bank before giving it to anyone. Saved beneficiaries in your banking app may also need updating.
Safety tips when sending money
- Check the account number twice. In many transfers, the account number decides where money goes; a correct IFSC does not fix a wrong account number.
- Before a large transfer, send a small amount first and confirm with the receiver.
- Get bank details directly from the person, not from a forwarded message. Fraudsters often send "changed account details" messages.
- If the bank app shows the beneficiary's name, check that it matches before you confirm.
- If money goes to the wrong account, contact your bank immediately with the transaction reference.
Frequently asked questions
Is IFSC the same for all branches of a bank?
No. Each branch has its own IFSC. The first four letters are the same for the bank, but the last six characters differ.
Can two branches have the same MICR code?
No. RBI describes the 9-digit code as unique for a bank branch.
My cheque has no MICR code. Is that a problem?
Most cheques in use today are MICR / CTS cheques. If yours is very old or non-standard, ask your bank for a new cheque book.

NEFT, RTGS, IMPS): IFSC.
